Mackay West State School proudly hosted the 2023 Mackay Opti-Minds Regional Challenge for the second year in a row on the weekend. We welcomed schools and judges from across the Mackay region to participate in this wonderful event.
This year the number of teams participating had increased to 47; representing 15 schools. As one of the inaugural participants in Opti-MINDS over 30 years ago, our school community supported the wide range of opportunities that Opti-MINDS offers. Our wonderful P&C worked tirelessly to ensure that judges and participants were well fed and immersed in the joyful community of our school. Staff members volunteered to judge, maintain the smooth running of the day and donate . This creative problem- solving event provides a platform for students to showcase their talents in thinking, teamwork, creativity and performance.
2023 saw Mackay West enter 3 teams into the event. One team in Science Engineering, one in Social Science and for the very first time, one in Media Communication. Mackay West State school was awarded Honours for Media Communication, First Place in Science Engineering and Social Science. The successful teams have been invited to travel to Brisbane to participate in the State Final at the University of Queensland.
