History of Mackay West State School

Mackay West State School was established as the South Ward State School in 1924, and was situated on the present site of the Mackay West Junior Campus.

In 1956, the original building was transferred to the present site of the Senior Campus, and additional wings established. This school became Mackay West State School and the original school in Bridge Road continued as Mackay West Infants School. In 1994 the two separate schools amalgamated to become Mackay West State School with two campuses and 3 precincts.    Our 2 Campuses each boast their own Library complete with State of the Art digital access and up-to-date, year level appropriate selections of reading matter.

In 2015, when Year Seven became the first year of high school the school structure was re-organised to accommodate Prep and Year 1 students at the Junior Campus and students in Years Two to Six the Senior Campus.  Mayor refurbishment work was undertaken in Y Block, Junior Camps in 2018, providing five modern Junior Year Levels learning areas.

Permanent shade structures were erected over the basketball court and Year Two/Three play areas in 2018 as a result of the impact of Cyclone Debbie. Our school emblem reflects the Moreton Bay Fig.  A number of these trees exist in our school and are heritage listed.  Indeed, our School incontinually evolving and improving - in 2020 our Main Sports Oval was refurbished, our Beach Volleyball Court will be completed & reloacted a refurbished playground to the Year 2 precinct.

Our P & C operates canteen facilities at both campuses, Big Chomp at the Senior Campus (under the Year 6 building) and Little Chomp from our brand new facility at the Junior campus.  Little Chomp is also the venue for our weekly Breakfast Club (every Wednesday Morning) courtesy of the P & C in conjunction with the Chaplaincy Program.
